Thanks for these helpful comments.
Without this, I would likely have destroyed my old cap trying to remove from the wrong side (wouldn't be the first time!)

Replacing center "brush" contact on Square 4 distributor
While recommissioning my '53 MK II Sq 4, I noticed that the center contact (graphite?) in the distributor had broken off and the spring was hanging partially out. That explains my failure to start the beast on last attempt some 6-8 months ago.

Re: solex carb and black smoke .
Hi Guy,
I also have a Solex on my '53 MK II Sq 4. Although I haven't seen much black smoke, my plugs do indicate a bit rich in running. My most obvious issue though, is that if I park the bike on its side stand, fuel dribbles continuously from the bowl.

Re: MkI Square Four fine tuning and performance troubles
It certainly sounds like your engine performance is abnormal. My own MK II, rebuilt just 1300 miles (and 1.5 years ago) has never had such anemic performance. Even during break in, I frequently got speeds up to 100 kph, and now she is very happy to go well beyond that. I respect the old gal's age ...

Trying to identify this bike
I was contacted via our Ariel North America website by a fellow from Argentina, who has acquired this bike, and is asking if anyone can identify it (i.e. year and model). The only comment I've received so far from US members is that it looks to be a "bitsa".

Re: Square Four MkI - first drives after restoration
Hi Gui,
I am pleasantly surprised to learn you have recovered from the too-tight end float so quickly, and congratulations on getting the old gal back on the road. As Simon and others suggested, I soldered a small bit of brazing rod into the slot on the air mixture screw. I was able to find a rod of ...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....
That's great news Gui. I found my own Mk II smoked and leaked like crazy for the first 50-100 miles or so, and seemed to be running hot. Now, with 800 miles on the clock, oil leakage is minimal and the engine seems to be running at a happy, moderate temperature.
Now get out there and log some miles ...

I have installed the filter kit on my mk II, don't know how similar your crankcase would be to mine but would be happy to take pics if it would help

Re: Shock absorber knocking
My recently rebuilt mk II engine with Morgo pump tops out at 70 PSI and pretty much stays there at cruise rpm even after warm. I believe the Morgo has its own regulator internal. 70 seems to have no adverse effect but 100 PSI seems pretty excessive
