Thank you for all the ideas.
I wonder if there's clearance for the irwin. My local screwfix has a set in so I may be able to measure before I buy.
If that's no good I think the crank has to come out.

Belt it Hard with short sharp blows and that will help loosen the threads then lie the bike on it's side Protect things with card board and weld a very short bolt to the damaged Hex. Earth the flywheel. You don't want the current going through the Ball races and ruining them. I've Always got them out. There's a lot of work stripping the Motor IF you don't need to. Nev

If you remove the barrel you can get at the sludge trap with a cold chisel. Don't ask me how I know.

Re: 1957 NH / Sludge Trap
SUCCESS!
I used an 11mm / 7/16 bolt grip (ebauer, screwfix, £18) and after one pull with a bar there was so little drama I thought it was slipping.
And the trap was clear.
New trap in now.
Timing pinion nut I used to spin crank was little more than finger tight though, typical for this bike so it's good that I found it. The idea was something which didn't need too much work, I've already got a long project.
Might be running again later today before I look for source of gearbox noise.

Usually the sleeve Gear and the One it engages with. Check bushes aren't loose as well. 4th gear is direct so it SHOULD be quiet. Magnetic Drain Plug is a good idea. Replace seals They leak at the speedo drive cable end . Nev

Re: 1957 NH / Sludge Trap
Have you got any idea how many miles this bike has done? 350's are not as hard on the gearbox as bigger motors are. Nev
