Painting Cylinder barrel and head

Post by Alec.Elliot »

Hi there

I am slowly winding up to restart the lapsed rebuild on my 4G Engine and would like to know if anyone has experience (good or bad) of painting the cylinder barrel, cylinder head and exhaust manifolds. (stove enamel, wood stove paint, etc)

I have a BSA Bantam that has had the barrel stove enamelled and it still looks good after 15 years or so.

Clearly, heat transfer is a different kettle of fish on a Bantam when compared to a Sq4.

All the best

Alec,
The best bet is to use ceramic paint. It is for very high temperatures and does not burn off.

I always use thishttp://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=281411929103&alt=web. Yes it's ceramic, gloss. By rights the barrel should be stain. But matt or stain never seems to last long. As it's porous. Gloss is not. Powder coat lasts but the engine runs hot as the powder coat keeps the heat in. So I wouldn't do that if I was you
