VHA cylinder liners?

Post by barry.krauter »

More than 30 years ago, I received a VHA barrel in a parts swap. The sleeve protruded below the alloy barrel, and it was broken clean off at the bottom end of the cylinder. I had the sleeve removed and determined the barrel was otherwise good. Those cylinder liners were unobtainable back then, Has the situation changed today? I did somehow obtain a VH Vacrit cylinder liner, but that's not the solution - no top lip. Any ideas?

I am restoring a 1931 P&M Panther 500cc. When I bought the heap of bits it was missing the barrel, however there were two 600cc barrels in the heap!

These guys bored and sleeved the 600 barrel down to 500cc. I provided a new piston and they checked the final honing dimensions with FW Thornton & Sons Ltd.

Not cheap (£207.60) but it will hopefully be OK when I finally finish the restoration ;) .

They are an 'old school' Engineering company and are very helpful.

In my 500 W/NG there is a liner from a tractor, done by my dad, could be Massey Ferguson, but to long ago to remember.

I just measured with my digital caliper: 86.94mm at the top. The bottom 1/4 inch varies - some distortion from where the original sleeve broke off.
I suspect the previous owner broke a conrod or piston!
