leaking oil scavenge pipe

Post by oliverjp »

i have a 1936 vb600 that i have recently acquired and the engine has been rebuilt some time ago so i primed the oil system before start up but i noticed the scavenge back to the tank was delayed on initial start up . so on inspection i have found there is a air leak between the sump filter and the timing cover , at first i thought the washer was missing in the timing cover but i have found the leak appears to be where the pipe enters the casting .has anyone had this issue and how did you seal the pipe effectively where the copper pipe enters the casting ?

Yes, been there. I used Permatex 80008 for that job; there's a picture in this blog post.

Copper age hardens and can crack.. Consider fitting a New pipe. Nev

well after very careful cleaning there was a leak around where the pipe enters the aluminum casting but this was only minor there was also a leak due to porosity inside the timing case . I have used Simons recommendation and used permatex 80008 and it has made a very good repair .
What i have found is using a vacuum pump is very effective in finding the leaks no wonder the oil pump was struggling to scavenge .
thank you for your replies and suggestions .
regards Oliver
