clutch tabs - ask a stupid question.....

Post by Alan G »

I assume these tabs are meant to be bent up to lock the bolts....?

Below is the picture of mine when I took it to bits and clearly they had just been installed as washers, not lock washers.

I plan to give then a slight bend in a vice before reassembly, so there is purchase for a hammer and drift to bend up to locate against the bolts. Or am I an idiot.....

Exactly. They need quite a decent bend if you are to avoid trashing the paint on the clutch basket. Ask me how I know...
cheers

Now there is an interesting question, why did you paint your clutch basket, there aren't any concourse points for painted clutch baskets?

If you fit them as is; then mark with a felt tip pen before you bend them in the vice. You should find that careful application of a pair of pliers will avoid any paint damage. If you do make a scratch, you could always respray the whole thing after assembly.Cheers, Chris.
P.S My pressure plate is polished. Wasn't me.

Would there be a market for clutch domes with viewing slots, so you could see your glamour red clutch basket?
cheers

A common alternative approach is to cut the original washer (which has the hole for all 6 bolts) into 3 pieces and use those as lock washers. Being the awkward individual that I am, following experience of the 6 bolts coming loose, I have drilled the heads of the bolts and used locking wire to secure them. I haven't had a bolt come loose in what must be about 50 years since I started doing this and yes, I have purchased 6 new bolts for the LG250 (current rebuild) and drilled their heads before lockwiring.

I am tempted to lock wire. Was thinking about doing this as those three tabs don't look very easy to work with.
