Wassel Carbs?

I have a 1" carb on my VH500 (Amal 376 29c). I think it should be 1 1/8 Amal 289 I think.

I am thinking about buying a 27mm or a 28mm Wassel . Anyone been there and done that? I found an old thread by LesH but he has not been active on here for sometime.

My thinking is that a new Wassel is likely to be a better carb than an rebuilt Amal, and is likely to be a cheaper option than buying an old Amal off eBay then buying the correct jets and refurb kit.

Thoughts?

I have fitted a 928 Wassel carb to my VHA. The engine runs much nicer than when the worn Amal was fitted.

Surfing on line I see some complaints about Wassel quality - but they were from 12 or more years ago.

As I understand it, the VH500 had a 1 1/8 model 289 in early years, and a 1 1/16 model 376 in later years.
My bike is a bitsa.. The bottom end is a 1958, the top is earlier and it is all wrapped in a 1946 chassis. It also has a twin port iron head.

If I buy a Wassel carb (which is very likely...), should I go for a 27mm or a 28mm. Is it likely I would notice any difference? Any thoughts? Both would come with the same jetting. I am leaning towards the 28mm which equates to just under 1 1/8, 27mm is just over 1 1/16.....

Personally I don't expect 1mm to make any noticeable difference...

Running a Wassell Evolution 30mm on a Matchless 500cc G80 CS, runs very well.

The concentric was a far better carb than the Monobloc. Some are original on speedway bikes. A GOOD 500 (with some tune) could take 30 mm. for top end go. Trials would be another Matter where you want a Plonker. Nev

hi i run a lot concentric carbs on my Ariels with no problems also i have used wassell carbs as well with no problems if they set up well, there was a dealer for wassell at kempton park autojumble and bike show
