Nice looking bike. I note that the rear brake has not been modified to prevent it locking up. By coincidence that topic was brought up in thread yesterday: http://forum.arielownersmcc.com/viewt ... =4&t=10753

I think it must be the wrong brake plate. The rear brake was cable operated and there was an adjuster at the top of the plate. The downward pointing brake lever was only a 1953 aberration.

My ‘57 Square Four, which is very original, has the downward pointing brake arm. It was an export bike if that makes any difference?

If only I had read Klaus’s comment before I posted the above. It was just the 53 square four that had the problem due to incorrect outer cable length. http://forum.arielownersmcc.com/viewt ... =4&t=10753

......but does that mean that Ariel were selling square fours from 53 to 59 with both variations of rear brake?
