My alloy head doesn't leave much space for the carb so I have to remove my air filter to get it off.
It was well gummed up

Is that scotchbrite in your air filter Steve?

I think they are, they've always been there since I bought it.

Do you have an old resin tank lining because this is what happens when modern fuel meets old Petseal, it slowly disolves the ling that then gums up the slide and sticks the throttle open? Happened to me a couple of times before I found out what the cause was. All very well for the goverernment to change the composition of fuel but they could have warned us that it could jam the throttle open and cause a crash, they could also have paid to have all the old lining removed and replaced with an ethanol friendly lining, however the safety of motorcyclists has never really been a priority of this or any other government.

I do have a lining in my tank, hmm it's possible I suppose Roger.
It's a two part epoxy type clear resin from Caswell.
I did have a previous tank and carb blockage partially caused by ethanol and another ingredient. Filling up once as I took my helmet off an ear plug dropped into my tank. 3 weeks later I ground to a halt. A bright yellow gunge had gummed everything up

Does the resin inside the tank have a soft and slightly sticky surface or is it hard as nails? I am not familiar with Caswell but if it is recent it should be OK.

Doesn't feel sticky, still seems glass hard.
