Re: Ariel 500 model B,C and E / 1927
today I made the missing, rear bracket. Looks like I already have them all. I'll have it sanded and blackened. Then we can start assembling the kit.
I'm quite looking forward to it

karol, very few outfits have the sidecar wheel so far back after the early 20's. Extra Toe in will only wear the rear tyres more and be careful on hard right turns as you can put the bike over the chair. Nev

I noticed it. It is an old model and the geometry of the set has not been perfect yet. I will be careful while driving. I often rode a motorcycle with a sidecar, but it was a younger model with a wheel more in front

Re: Ariel 500 model B,C and E / 1927
thanks for the picture. This geometry is great, but can only be used on younger sidecars. My model has the rear wheel too shifted to the rear. I will have to use less converging wheels.Vincent.vanGinneke wrote: Tue Oct 26, 2021 11:31 pm side-car-reglage-pincement-et-precession.gifside-car-reglage-ouverture.gif

I'm not a "Charrioteer", but my understanding is that different countries had different preferences.
The Germans (for instance) had the chair wheel in line with the bike's rear wheel (it allowed some outfits to have a driven chair wheel - e.g. the Zundapp Green Elephant).
The Brits preferred around 8 inches of 'lead' on the chair wheel.
I've forgotten the background to this thread - but is that 'chair' French ??
Interesting topic, but as I scared myself a couple of times in my youth with Panther outfits I've left these contraptions well alone
.

I set the toe-in of the front wheel to approximately 5 mm. Tomorrow I'll tighten all the screws and I'll measure it. According to the manual, my model should be in the range of 0 - 1 cm of convergence . if everything is okay tomorrow, i will try the first ride.
I will not risk killing my wife. first I'll go alone and later I'll take a lame friend.
Paul helped me a lot today. Some screws needed to be loosened several times and tightened again. He came at the right time and saved me. I could already mention the name of God in vain.

Re: Ariel 500 model B,C and E / 1927
I have put the bike over the chair myself so I felt compelled to mention it. I jumped clear off the bike to avoid going under it.
If the sidecar wheel is not forward of the drive wheel, toeing it in won't help take the load off the steering . The rear tyre does wear pretty fast and is being pushed sideways by the drag of the chair anyhow. More toe in pushes it more. On cambered roads particularly leaning the bike OUT as in the diagram helps reduce the pull on the handlebars . The amount of TRAIL on the front steering affects load on the handlebars. The best steering damper is your TWO hands firmly on the bars and some bike manufacturers (like Vincent-HRD) advise longer bars when a chair is fitted. Don't be too proud to fit a damper if it's needed.. Outfit's aren't for everybody but I started out on one with a sidebox fitted carrying engine blocks for Albion Trucks in city traffic when I was 16 years old and I've had quite a few since.. Currently working on one for myself again as I'm finding the taller bikes hard to get my leg over.
Hope this comes over OK in the translation, Karol your enthusiasm must inspire others,as it does for me. Keep it up. Nev
