Hello,
Has anyone already installed the "special alloy rings for riviting to chain wheel to stop oil leaking"
on a single cylinder, does that help, does someone have a few pictures ?

Hi, I installed these on my square four. I took great care with the job, and they seem to be a complete success- not a drop of oil leaks now so i would recommend them, Best Regards, Bob.

Hi, thanks for your answer.
As far as I know this solution was originally developed for the Square four, but does it work that well on a VH Single ?
Does anyone have any experience ?

Hello Ralph,
I've installed these discs on my Sq4 without any problems but my attempt to do the same on my NG met with failure. It has been a few years so I can't remember the details but I found that there wasn't enough room for the disks to do their job.

Hello Chris,
Thanks for your info.
As I was told, you should adjust the parts for the single cylinder so that they are very close to the housing but not rubbing against it, but no one has reported who has done this successfully ...

There doesn't seem to be enough room in my VH to fit them.

I don`t know what the differences are between the Sq 4 and single chaincases in terms of room?, but i did have to file/trim the rings a little to get them to be as close as possible to the chain case wall without fouling. This of course meant several attempts involving re-assembly to check. I seem to remember that my chaincase did not leak at the back (gearbox side) but always passed a little oil (I use ATF) into the clutch housing which ran out of the drain hole at the bottom of the clutch cover dome .The fact that Ariel provided the hole in the first place is a "problem bodge" -they should have fitted the rings to stop the leak in the first place! Anyway for me -perfect result!

Hi Bob,
What bike are you talking about? Like I said I can't remember the details but I do remember grinding off some of the lip of one of the two discs thinking that I could get them to fit my NG but after several attempts I came to the conclusion that I would have to grind the lip totally off to get them to fit so I gave up. I've just been out to the garage and found the pair of discs that I gave up on. The smaller of the two discs has the lip almost totally ground off.

The alloy rings work very well and stop all oil leaks around the gearbox mainshaft, even when the chaincases are overfull. I initially purchased a set for my 4, the instructions for which said if fitted to a single the discs would require a little sanding down. I then did some metal spinning and made sets for all my singles. The photos show the discs after being trimmed to give minimal clearance to the singles chaincases.
As the chain wheel needle roller cage will not get much oil, ensure that you use plenty of grease there on assembly.
Drilling the chain wheel can be difficult. Some chainwheels drill easily with a high speed drill however the hardening on others was such that I had to use a tungsten drill in a post drill on low speed and plenty of lubricant.
