Got my paint back and it is flawless but you can decide yourself . I asked about painting over chrome and he would have no problems with that . His card is here also . I wouldnt hesitate to recommend him .

PS - only just realised that there was a 'page 2' to this conversation! Sorry I haven't responded sooner - must be going gaga - little wonder I managed to leave the sump plug loose after nearly 50 yrs of tinkering with it.....
Thanks to all who responded - I took it first to the Consett guys, who were very helpful, but were not comfortable with the process of painting over the chrome plate. So I then took it to Colour Crazy in York - the guy there didn't seem at all put out by the chrome or the pinstriping, so I have left it with him (he remembered the previous Ariel tank). Now I must wait to see how it turns out....
Thanks for all the suggestions - in the end only Colour Crazy Resprays would take it on (the chrome plate seemed to put the others off) and I have just picked it up from them. Looks like they have done a terrific job - £250. See photos attached
I had a chromed Norton tank painted ,and the pinstriping was painted using some specialized self etching pinstriping paint ......catch was after about 10 years, the pinstriping lifted off ,having etched its way thru the chrome and leaving rusty stripes on the chrome tank.
