Different between Amal 276's

Post by cmattina »

Hi folks

This is a question from a novice... I am having a hard time figuring out the difference between different Amal 276 carbs... They seem to all have a number/letter code after the 276. What does this refer to and how important is it?

I am looking at options for a 1952 dual port 350

HI i Think the letter means left or right hand carbs it is where the plunger is for wen you flood the carbs because the plunger needs to be on the outside of the carb so you can get at it

The code is more or less specific to a particular bike makers engine ..(and the design..prewar carbs have a number of air holes in the body for jet air,) All 276 carbs are WW2 and postwar ,these holes are no longer in the body ,and there is a small jet inlet in the main inlet...once the carb is stripped to bits ,there is little difference between codes, except diameter of throat,(1" being most common ),and the side the idle mix screw enters the body....this obviously is opposite the float bowl so it can be adjusted ..In fact the major structural variation is in the float bowl ,which may be quite specific ,or general.

As I understand it the numbers relate to the specification of the complete carb, not any single component. So in some cases you might find different numbers on carburettors which are identical apart from the jets, or the throttle slide.
As John says you need to know what the spec of the basic components is to understand what'll work for you, unless you're going to limit yourself to trying to find a complete carburettor that was originally supplied with your model of machine - even if you found a body with the right number you'd still need to know about the rest of the spec if you were going to build a complete unit.
You might find it useful to have a root around the amal carb site - I think you can see what the component specs would be to suit your bike although I don't know if the type/pattern designations they use now are the same as the originals.

The jet block varies and must suit the body type ie Match the holes. Later ones have a single one at the front and suit having an air cleaner. The idle adjuster screw passage is right through also on the earlier type and blocked on the later one. Mix these up and you've got trouble. The jet block must be a good fit in the main body as well for the idle to work properly. Nev

As mentioned the numbers are for each individual bike, from different manufacturers, and there are likely different numbers for exactly the same carb

All you need is any 276 body and then add the right jetting, float chamber angle and throttle slide:

A word of caution though, it is highly likely that any secondhand carburettor body will be worn enough to make a reliable idle almost impossible.
