28 Black Ariel shock absorber

Post by conmuller »

My 28 Model B shock absorber spring in the primary is missing. Where do you find them or a diagram on how it is put together. Have the sprockets and nuts with lock washer. Any help please Conrad

Single Spares might be able to help or advise.

Single spares would be your best bet - otherwise I think someone in the Ariel Register may have had some made. From memory, they were made from flat or oval wire. One of the Aussie members may know.
There is a 1928 parts book in the club library.
You need lock washer, two nuts, a stepped washer which fits into the spring, sliding member and sprocket.

A few years ago I lost the lock nut here.. Not really a fun experience.

If Pat doesn't have the spring then you can try the Slovenský Ariel klub here https://www.arielklub.sk/magazin-co-je- ... ensko.html
They have many parts for the Black Ariel.

Conveniently, my '28 Black Ariel engine is on my workbench. It will be a couple of weeks before I will have a chance to continue with its disassembly, but I can give you approximate dimensions.

The order of assembly is:
-- an adapter slips over the end of the crankshaft. This adapter has the ID of the crank and an OD of approx. (or precisely?) 1-1/4"
-- a spring made from oval wire slips over the adapter. Depending on how you want to count them, it has about 3 coils and is compressed to ~0.7" in its installed state. The ID of the coils is roughly the OD of the adapter (i.e. ~1-1/4") and the OD is 2", so the oval wire is ~3/8" thick by ~0.15" wide. Once I disassemble it in a few weeks I will be able to measure the spring constant.
-- the inner part of the 2-lobe shock absorber.
-- the sprocket with the outer part of the 2-lobe shock absorber.
-- two nuts to hold it all in place.

I hope this helps.
