Yeah.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ow ... /DG_069727

SORN isn’t needed if:
.... your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January 1998

It means your vehicle was last taxed in 1983 and is pre-SORN and you do NOT need to SORN it.
Keep quiet as it's off their radar.
Once you tax it, then it's back onto their system and you would need tax or SORN from then on ..

thanx for that..i was looking to see if the present reg number is the original number or one put on later after a previous one was sold...will it say on the logbook if it has been re-regged at anytime...i'm enquiring because it has a scottish number and i have read that most re-regged bikes are given scottish numbers...

I don't think the logbook records that.

The newer logbook, the V5C, does has a "date of registration" and a "date of manufacture" and the transferablity of the reg number (non transferable registration mark), however.

Paul Jameson, archivist, would be the man to ask but I know that when you register a completed project as a vehicle, then your "date of manufacture" will reflect when it was made and the "date of registration" when DVLA added it to their system. I am not sure what happens if you sell a plate and request an "age related" one; I suspect they will do the same (your date of registration may change the date the new plate was added) and at that point the mark is non-transferable.

Or indeed, email DVLA. Sometimes then even respond.
