Hello all. I am in need of some help getting my dads 34 red hunter running. We purchased it a few weeks ago to restore while i currently have my 48 square four on hold, but before the restoration process starts, we want to get it running, and we would like to get it running by Christmas day so we can show my grandfather who owned a 37 red hunter when he was my age (21).
The engine apparently was running a few years ago until a few pieces were taken off of it for another project.
All that it should need to fire up is the lubrication system all plumbed up and the ignition timed and connected (currently has no timing chain)
Any help, information and pictures would be greatly appreciated.

this is one of the oil lines that isn't connected, the one on the drive side goes up to the head, but this one is just sitting there.

There is also this fitting in the timing case (in red circle) that leads nowhere. What is it for/what does it do? (sorry i don't have a better picture)

In Oz, no-one lives near anyone :twisted:

(I think the hole in the timing cover is just a breather and the other one is maybe a drain - there are some threads here somewhere with some illustrations of the exposed-valve lube setup but I suspect someone will be along soon who knows exactly how it goes together. I assume you've got the sprockets and just the timing chain is missing?)

The hole in the timing case is just a breather, it has a one way valve and then exhausts to air. The other one looks like an oil mist breather to the inlet port , however you say you already have one ,so I dont know.

The oil pipe is intended to feed the inlet valve guide however, on my own '34 head, the boss exists but is not drilled and tapped. Maybe a previous owner retained the pipe to assist crankcase breathing?

So he already has that one and it doesn't look long enough to reach the boss on the inlet valve..

Hi guys.
I thought the lower fitting in the timing case was a breather, but thought i would check anyway.
I have the timing cover and sprockets, just missing the chain.
The bloke i bought it off lives close and he said he would give me a hand to do the timing when i was ready, so thats not much of an issue.
I will get a better picture of the 2 oil lines at the back of the cylinder later on. The one on the drive side of the motor goes up into the side of the head, as shown in Grahams picture, but the one on the timing side is just sitting there.

There is a lot of work done to it, maybe even altered to alcohol.

Just close the second oilfeed at the crankcase (it's useless), also close the bottem timingcasebreather (spraying to much oil) but open the sidetimingcasebreather and give it a driptube to the primarychain otherwise it will wearout in no time.

Some heavy bicycle chains have the right size for the timing sprockets.

It came with the chain cases, I just haven't bothered swapping them over yet.
It was set up as a 'race' bike about 10 years ago, but I don't think it was ever actually raced.

A few more photos would help to identify just what you have. Obviously the forks are post war and so is the petrol tank. The frame appears to be 1936 or later but I can't be sure from what I can see.
