primary chaincase leak help
primary chaincase leak help
Hi all.
Putting the gruntmaster on the road. But I have a big oil leak on the primary chaincase. I have filled it up with fresh oil to the screw level. But when running or after running. It all drips out the lower chain guard (Ferg) and looks like out of the back of the primary chain case. Any ideas or is it just to full or am I doing something wrong. It's the same fresh oil so from now where else
Cheers Paul

Re: primary chaincase leak help
Hello Paul
First thing is the is an oil bleed screw middle right hand side on the primary chaincase (got a spring on it) which is redundant on the FERC is it closed up? and secondly you don't need the oil up to the level hole just enough oil to dip the chain.
Regards Steve.

Hi Steve found that screw hole and plugged it with an Bsw screw. One question got a spring on it ? What's this for ? Maybe to much oil being flung about. Thanks for your help. Cheers Paul

OK Paul your welcome
It's to regulate an amount of oil spray onto the rear chain on Non-FERC Bikes, should have a pointed screw end to regulate the flow I have a pic some where I will post if I can find it.
Cheers Steve.

Re: primary chaincase leak help
It protrudes to block off the oil feed.

Re: primary chaincase leak help
I presume that when you said it was fitted with a Ferg that you meant a Ferc, or to the non eniciated, a fully enclosed rear chain. The talk of adjuster screws and springs can be ignored as the chain is fed from a bleed from the oil tank. if you remove the filler cap, on the far side, that is the left hand side of the bike, there should be, from memory,a 1/2 inch hole, which should have a felt plug or perhaps it should be called a restrictor fitted. If this plug is missing then the oil returning to the tank will go straight down the hole and flood the Ferc. I know,I have been there, and the oil drenched the back tyre and caused the valve to rip out, causing a very scary moment. Dave

Re: primary chaincase leak help
Paul, filing to the level screw will give you too much oil in the primary case.this oil will exit behind the clutch and in your case into the ferc. Reduce the oil level removing the screw and tip the bike 45 degrees to left.this should give just enough oil for the chain today in, without blowing out the back.

Re: primary chaincase leak help
Another less likey possibility could ge an oil leak out from the gearbox main shaft, I've had some very bad leaks here recently. My sleeve gear bushes were very badly worn
