Crankshaft and rods
I don't own an Ariel, but a neighbor recently died who had owned a '54 Red Hunter.
He also owned a BMW boxer.
At the estate sale I noticed some crankshaft parts and some connecting rods. After perusing your forum I believe they're for an Ariel. I bought the con rods and I could probably get in touch with the folks and buy the crank as well.
What I need to know is what I should look for in terms of original style, type,or number, as well as condition.
I could be all wrong, and they could be for a Zundapp, for all I know, but I thought I'd ask.
Some pictures would be of help.
Thanks in advance, Tom

Re: Crankshaft and rods
By the way, the rods I got are approx 7.5" long center to center. The big end is a solid circle, with no removable cap.
One of these rods is flanged at the big end, one unflanged.
I'll try to post a picture.
Does this sound like anything Ariel used?
If so, and if I can get the crankshaft, I intend to offer it for sale on this forum.
Thanks in advance, Tom
P.S. I can't seem to insert an image, maybe someone could tip me as to how.

Re: Crankshaft and rods
Thanks for the replies. 7 1/2" center to center on the rods is as close as I can measure it.
The crank was in 2 pieces, each with a counterweight plate. I think it did say "qualcast" on it but I'm going to go back and check .
I sure hope I can rescue these parts, which no doubt would be sold for scrap, if they are indeed for an Ariel.
By the way, the only British bikes I've owned were a 69 Royal Enfield TT Interceptor and a Matchless 500 twin that had been chopped.
I sure get a kick out of seeing that Bullet is still making an old-style-looking Enfield. I may have to get one in my dotage.

Re: Crankshaft and rods
Here is our 2004 500cc enfield '65 (5 speed box and electric start), which we bought when it was a year old with 120km on it.
Had it 6 years and it's done maybe 5000 miles ?
It now lives in a vacc bag and will probably remain there for a very long ime.
It's a useful thing to have for my old age (30 years ?) when kickstarting may be an issue. Mind you, I have a CJ750 which is also has a secret electric start ...
so, don't wait. BUY ONE NOW ...
If you cannot post a picture, then send them to me (address below) andI will post for you

Hi Tom,
the rod pictured is for a 500.
If you squint, you will see some numbers - which will help identify which model it came from.
The flywheels will probably also be numbered. Let us know what they are.
I wouldn't wait for my old age to get a bike. Better to ride now and ride later too.

Thanks for the input. One rod looks like the one in the picture, with what I call a flange around the big end, the other doesn't have that feature.
I sent a pic to John Nash, so hopefully he can get them posted here.
The rods measure approx. .90" dia. at the small end, 1.92" at the big end, and 1.685" with the bearing in place. (one of them is like that).
The numbers on the flanged rod are A7473(SA)B3.
Oh, and I'm not waiting for my old age, it's already here! (64). I had the Enfield (a 1969 model), in 69-72 or thereabouts.

Just a correction, the Enfield was a 65, and I had it circa 66-70. This early-onset sucks.
John, what a beautiful Enfield you have, and you're smart to keep it in a vacuum. What a ride that will be in 30 years!
I talked to the folks with the crank today, and will probably be able to get it in a couple of days. Hope they don't get too cagey and start thinking it's worth a fortune.
I used to work with a friend remanufacturing parts for the SSK model Mercedes. When we had to outsource a job to another machine shop, we learned to tell them it was for an old tractor or else their prices soon shot way up!
