1930 Burman Q Help Required!

I know that I should never have touched it in the first place but the Q box came apart today as I have a layshaft with a speedo drive from Mike Taylour which I wanted to put in. This was probably a bad idea and I should have known better as I have no idea if I'll ever get it back together again. Anyway, it's too late now.

So here are some questions.....

1) I have to swap the gears over as the ones on the new layshaft are not quite the same (one is different). Do I have to put the cluster in the oven or do I just tap the gears off?

2) When I come to put the gears back and attach the selector, what do I need to know?

Dave I hope you never pull a Rudge gearbox down, theyre full of loose needle rollers. Remove the gears with a small puller or a soft hammer,heating wont get you anywhere.Refitting is pretty easy,just check that it changes ok when youre finished.Regards John.

This evening has been spent in the garage trying to remove the gears from the Q box layshafts. The large gear wheels tapped off ok but the small ones did not.

I tried hammer and wood and then a chunky extractor which fits very well. Nothing budged. I then fired up the oven and did the same again. Still nothing budged. If I had bashed much harder or tightened the extractor any more it may have ended in tears.

So it looks like I will have to put it back together as it came apart.

If anyone has any magic bullet tips please let me know.

Dave,clean the assy in petrol,then inspect the gap between gear and shaft maybe with a magnifyer,for telltale signs of loctite,say a thin dark red layer in the joint.When you heated the shaft,sometimes you can smell loctite,it has a peculiar smell.Anyway,if there is loctite ,I am wrong, and it may need softening with heat,and pressing off while hot,as it sets again as it cools.You will need a hydraulic press [preferably] and a bearing extractor,[two halves that clamp under the gear ]which most people with a press will have several sizes of.I recently pressed off a boat propshaft coupling with loctite and rust in it and it took nearly 40tons to move on a shaft about 30mm dia.With the right equipt and a bit of care,no damage to any part will occur. Bear in mind that excessive heat may draw the hardening of the gear to some extent,and any concentrated heating that causes colors to come on the steel[ie yellow brown blue purple] is damaging,and must be avoided.200c in a household oven wont cause any problems,Im talking oxy torches.Regards John.

Just a thought,but youre not trying to remove a gear thats part of the shaft,I hope.Regards John.

It looks to me like this gear wheel should come off the shaft. I have attached some images of some parts.

Dave,its just a tight spline.Press it apart,and press the new one on.Regards John.
