Exhaust rocker box wanted

Post by Paul Gasson »

Please help if you can.

For 1950 NH

Whilst on a ride this week the exhaust valve lifter vibrated loose and has been knocked out of the way by the rocker which has totally taken out the thread holding it into the casting. Must admit I did not fully tighten it because the thread was already a bit slack.

I’m not a welder or a machinist so I can’t repair it.

I’m looking for an exhaust rocker box casting only, in decent condition to replace it, Ariel part 850-38, this does not have the feeler gauge hole. I would obviously consider the later type as well, but earlier type preferred for originality.

I’m based in north west England so a UK part would be preferred.

Please have a rummage through any spare parts you may have and if you have one you are prepared to offer, I would be very grateful. I’m off the road until I can find a replacement.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Also available new from Draganfly, made with assistance of the club, something that regrettably no longer happens.

Dave, thanks for pics, I will send email during today.

Roger, with respect the Draganfly webshop does not list the -38 item at all and it appears that the -54 part says used part only available with no indication if/when new parts will be available?

That's odd because I thought there were lots left as they did not sell well in spite of the apparent scarcity of them when i wanted one.

When I spoke to Geoff, the new single spares man, he said that there was a known weakness around the area where the valve lifter fits so if they vibrate loose or someone over tightens to prevent loosening they may create a problem. Maybe, after all these years they have started fail?

I saw a photo where someone had a tab washer between the casting and lifter body, might be worth making one.

Now they are available. Ariel added these quite late on and I had them made as I got fed up with mine coming loose and spewing oil all over the place. 348-54, so added in 1954, at least 16 years after the problem arose.

Roger, that’s great news and I will buy one when I purchase all the other parts I will need to rebuild it.

Please note that I have been able to source a rocker box from Dave Owen so big thank you to Dave.
