S4 Crankshaft nuts

Post by BrianReynolds »

Hello All,
Finally ( after 2 years on the bench) assembling my 57 Mk11 engine, the crankcase is assembled, but I have a question, how tight should the large nuts on the ends of the crankshafts be? I havent found any reference to this, I have the Waller book, plus scoured whatever I can find but nothing so far. Also, would you use thread locker on the threads? I have also read conflicting information on the crankshaft end floats. Right now I have 0.003” front and back and the crankshafts spin freely. Dragonfly state 0.005” on the rear crank so not sure which way to go.

There are very few torque settings listed for any Ariels, ordinary tight will do and thread locker will not do any harm. The only one that is prone to coming undone is the cush drive nut. Draganfly quote the following from Ariel publications "The crankshaft end float should be .003” to .004” on the front crank and .005” to .006” on the rear." You will need a K115-48/2 shim for the rear crank

Thank you Roger, much as I thought but good to have it confirmed.
