Correct battery VHA

Post by Robert Laughton »

Hello group, this is my first post.
I went to look at a Morgan, and came home with a '53 Red Hunter.
I can't seem to find a battery that will fit the box.
I look forward to enjoying this forum,
Thanks,
Rob in Canada

hi Rob ;
this is the biggest battery that will fit inside the modern rubber pu7d box , i have one inside my battery box on my NH .
its 13ah 6v ES13-6 , the terminals are spade type and youll need some 90deg terminals to put on the battery cables .
the battery takes up all the room inside the case and the lid will cover it although it is a close fit , you may need to put hole or notch in the side at top of case to allow wires to come out the side or back of it and will be good to fit an inline fuse holder , i have my fuse holder tucked down behind the battery box .

the only other battery i could find to fit was a 4ah small battery which needed a fair bit of foam packing to hold it in place but the battery did not last very long when i used headlights , so i found someone had used this 13ah battery in a PU7D case and so i bought a modern "lucas" rubber case and put
it all on the bike , no problem now and good capacity.

regards , ian

Welcome to the forum

Good choice, but isn't the photo of a KH, Fieldmaster, at least the engine?

I have a similar battery box into which I've fitted a Motobat MBT6N6 battery.

Regards Mick

The engine is certainly from a KHA only made for 1953, more info and possible history available if you can provide the engine and frame numbers. Only 453 were built. The KH and KHA 500 twins are usually known as Fieldmaster but for most of their life, until 1956, they were called Red Hunter Twin or de-Luxe twin for the KG.

Hello Rob,

I have used this battery successfully in both coil and magneto ignition Ariels for many years. It fits into the old battery cases and is available from this Canadian supplier:

Where in Canada are you located?

Thank you Ian, Mick, Roger and Chris, and thanks for warm welcome.

I can tell this is a great forum!

I am a newbie with these bikes, as I'm sure you can tell.

The bike is a KHA with XFA engine, so a Fieldmaster, not a Redhunter as I first thought. The owner passed away, so there was no one to answer questions.

Chris, I'm in Niagara On The Lake Ontario, near Toronto.

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I try to get this beast running.
