I would appreciate comments please, on something that, to my simple mind, does not make sense.
Reading the KH owners manual, there is some ambiguity about setting up the the valve timing - frankly it does not make sense (well at least not to me).
The pinions are all marked with dots and it talks of putting the engine at TDC so that the dot on crankshaft pinion point vertically upwards and then arranging the dots on the camshaft pinions so that they face each other. They say that doing this cannot guarantee the correct valve timing, but given that the pinions are keyed to the shafts, there can be no adjustment here and any variation in timing will result from engagement of the teeth in the drive chain.
I am going to blaspheme. On my Norton, the camshaft is chain driven from the crank and both pinions have a timing mark and one is instructed to set them up so that there are a specific number of rollers counted between these teeth (can't remember the exact number). So, is there not a similar procedure to be undertaken concerning the number of rollers between the crankshaft - Inlet - inlet exhaust pinions (ore something similar)?
How do fellow KH owners do this?

Yes there will be a specific number of rollers but they are not specified. Make sure you do it before the head is fitted as it is virtually impossible to do it against valve spring pressure, I once spent several hours trying. The dots on the cam wheels are not directly opposite but one is slightly above the centre line and the other slightly below as shown in Waller.

Further to Roger's post above, inlet cam is 1/16th centre line above 7 exhaust is 1/16th below centre line, crankshaft is on centre line, dot at the top.
