Spitting Hunter
Re: Spitting Hunter
Roger, it is a plunger type, identical, I think, to the one Morgo has been selling for Triumph twins forever.

Re: Spitting Hunter
Is it one of Drags' 'Hawker' pumps (which look like a Morgo but have the word 'Hawker' down them, if the pic is anything to go by)

Re: Spitting Hunter
Hmmmmm, reading through I note ... " I pulled out the pushrods and found that they are different lengths. The old Clymer manual I have does not mention different lengths. One is +/- 10-3/8" and the other is about 1/4" shorter. Both are steel, as apparently is correct for the iron barrel and head. I don't see how this would cause my problem, so long as the valve lash is correct, but it's just another mystery.."
... Looking in the Dragonfly parts list, for years 1939 - 55 both rods show as being 10 5/8th part # 1856-39 (10 3/8th are for years 1934 -38) measured trom tip to inside base of cup

Re: Spitting Hunter
Bernie, so I have one incorrect pushrod. Still, could this cause my problem?

Re: Spitting Hunter
I would think there is a Possibility (although I wasn't asked). The Pushrod will get closer to one side when it's shorter and the adjuster is further down. Nev

When you say `slippery oil' - what do you mean?R.Herman wrote: Tue Mar 03, 2026 9:59 pm J.Coleman: I'd love to have an oil scraper ring - I have one, from Draganfly - but the ring land in my piston cannot accommodate it.
My valve guides are new, and while slightly looser than optimal, not enough to puke a lot of extra oil, I think.
I'm thinking again that perhaps due to using slippery oil the rings have not properly seated?

Re: Spitting Hunter
As Nev says there is a possibility that this is your problem, if nothing else it is probably changing the valve overlap period.
You could try swapping the pushrods round & see if the problem moves to a smokey exhaust.
I neglected to put the part # for 10 3/8ths ... 1856 - 34
Do you have a timing disc to bolt on the cranckshaft ? Using that you will get accurate opening/closing & overlap timings/periods

Re: Spitting Hunter
Tony: slippery oil = Castrol Classic GTX 20/50. Lots of zinc.
Bernie/Nev: I can easily swap the two pushrods and run it to see if that changes anything. When I pulled them out the longer (correct) one was on the intake side.
I do have a timing disc. Where can I find specs on valve opening/closing/overlap?
Edit: I found a thread on this forum started by Paul Gasson and responded to by Keith Mettam et al, so I have a starting point to check valve timing.
