I have had the same hole in one of my sets of cases. I can't tell you which set but it might even be the current set in my Red Hunter. I have not experienced any issues as a result of the hole.
On my 1957 VH in the seventies I broke the drive side cast iron flywheel which I put down to the use of a ball bearing as the timing side main bearing instead of a roller bearing. I believe the extra flexibility of the ball bearing caused the flywheel to flex more than it was designed to do but I will admit to a high compression piston, big carb, etc at the time of the breakage. So I would not use a ball bearing on the timing side in a 500cc engine.
would this be a problem ?

Thanks all.
I think the main advantage of a roller bearing would be that upon closing the crankcase it's easier to slide the roller in it's outer ring compared to a ball bearing that already sits in the TS.

The trouble with unshouldered rollers is the Outter sleeve can come loose in the case when the engine gets very hot and come out till it hits the flywheel. Nev
