Rust in air box

Post by Richard B »

The air box, that part between the rubber connection to the carburettor and the air cleaner, has in the past become extremely rusty. Despite filling the lower part with resin, spraying with aluminium paint aerosol, where possible, and hoovering I am still getting rust in the carburettor and inevitably into the engine. Any suggestions?

Further to my earlier post, has anyone used Waxoyl?

Hi, I've tried waxoyl on top of primer sprayed into every crack/crevis I could find. It reduced the rust particles but not completely. There is a double skin at the top of the section with a compartment which it is difficult to get into but small bits of rust come out through a drain hole. Finally used a filter over the carb intake held in place by the rubber connector. You can use a filter unit on the end of the carb until the bits stop coming through, or by-pass the frame section with a large dia. tube. Brian H.

I put a 'liberal amount' of waxoyl in my airbox - as soon as things got hot the engine started racing and wouldn't shut off (not even with ignition off and petrol off).
The engine did eventually wind down. I have to put this down to the volatiles in the waxoyl acting as a fuel (the stuff is extremely flammable and doesn't need much to get it going), I've not put any more waxoyl into the airbox and it's not happened again.
Maybe coat the inside with oil (or WD40)?

(The only permanent solution to this - and to stopping the airbox eventually rusting out completely - would seem to be to cut the thing off, de-rust by blasting or chemistry and weld back on again.)

Spray Premix and let the fuel evaporate out and leave the Oil or do the same with the waxoil. Lean mixtures with a Hot 2strokemotor will make the revs go through the roof even with the Ignition off. I've seen them throw a rod and you can't do anything about it. Use compressed air to dry it out maybe? Nev

Many thanks to everyone who responded, particularly for the warnings about using Waxoyl.

It's best you arrest the rust somehow. It's not good stuff going through the Motor. Zinc plate it? Nev

Further to my earlier posts, I have now abandoned (perhaps temporarily) the air box and rubber connector, and fixed a mesh across carburettor inlet. The bike runs just as well but time will tell if this is a permanent arrangement.
