For Sale: 1934 VG -or VF perhaps-

Post by Vincent.vanGinneke »

For sale in the Netherlands.

Abandoned project -Not my Ariel :D -.
A customer who has it in his workshop from a customer from him....
I was asked to help find a new owner.
I have more pictures, I can send to those who are genuinely interested, and if further info is needed I can bring you in to contact.
Send me a PM .

I do not know who has done the engine / gearbox and other refurbishing.
The Ariel has a valid Dutch license, it can be used straight after completion. (in the Netherlands)
First registration : 30-6-1934 First registration in the Netherlands : 25-4-1996.
Dutch registration plate starts with ZM.
Frame code Y.... Engine : GA.... those tie up according to Hartley with a VF from 1934.
Code on Burman not known by me.

A lot of work (and money) has already gone in to this Ariel but it still needs work to finish.
Tank needs to be painted and linered.
Tank badges I noted in a box look odd but correct ones could be there. I dont know.

Asking price is 7500,- euro. (note : not my idea)

Looks to be complete, engine seems to be renovated but condition is unknown.
Engine gearbox and front forks are in the frame, the rest needs to be done.
Both wheels with new rims / spokes, tires fitted.
Handlebar 1" but levers are not the prewar solid type and I doubt the manette's .
New fishtail silencers and exhaust pipes in wrapping.
Oil tank should be the smaller type but it's no shame to have the larger model on it.
I did not see the Amal carb, lower rear chainguard or the two front engine plate covers in the pictures that I have.

The engine number is from a VG despatched to Australasia in May 1934. If the frame number is Y 5326 it is the original. I suppose that all the original fixings have been thrown away to be replaced by the usual metric or possibly Unified threads, mostly of the wrong length and style. Primary cases, levers, toolbox......?

Australasia includes New Zealand and some other places in that area. Do you know the frame number, if so please whisper it so the number thieves cannot steal it.

As far as I know the 1934 model VG or VF should have a hand operated gearchange, which seems not to be present on this petrol tank…? Not shure about the BA gearbox either on this machine. The same for the rear engine plate which should hold the rearbrake spindle/stud for the brake pedal. The VF also did have the small 350 petrol tank with hand gear change like the VA-3 side valve.
For sure one is free to ask what ever you want, even 7500,- euro but, as it seems, with quite some missing/wrong parts I think this asking price Is way to optimistic.

yes a later BA box as evidenced by the sheet steel clutch arm introduced in 1935 and foot change by the differently shaped outer cover. CP/BA were fitted from 1933 on 4 speed models but not OG/OH.

Paul, it looks indeed like it has a wrong left rear engine plate, see pic showing the prim.case.
and the footchange BA, but it could be a original fitment ?
Or more likely a later date 'update' :D

Vincent I’am afraid the shown gearbox was intended as a ‘upgrade’ as you call it… but worse: as far as I can see the petrol tank shows no signs it’s ready to accept the hand operated gear change, indicator and other fittings etc. So in other words, this seems to be a ‘normal’ 500 petrol tank? To me it’s not clear if this is a VF or a VG. If it’s a VF it could be a VF3 or a VF4 (3 or 4 speed gearbox). The VF shared the same small petrol tank as the 557cc VA3 and VA4, and the 250-350 ohv models.

If the numbers are correct it was despatched as a VG, no mention of a 1935 or later BA 'box being fitted. Still too much money!

I agree with Roger. Even though it is clear that a lot of work has been done, it is still a lot of money for an unfinished project that will still COST A LOT.
