HF1441 horn and fitting.

Post by david.anderson »

Something that my 57VHs were missing was the original horn, Lucas HF1441. Finally after some searching I have scrounged a few horn parts and will have one working and one non-working horn. I have 2 different brackets that hold the horn and neither seems to fit toolbox, assuming the horn bracket fits over the toolbox bottom mount rather than behind it and assuming they were from an Ariel. Can anyone advise what is the correct bracket and whether it should fit in front of or behind the toolbox bracket. Further the horn brackets have ¼ ‘ holes whereas the bottom bracket of my toolbox is fixed with a 5/16” bolt. Any photos and advice for the correct horn bracket shape and mounting would be appreciated.

This is a bit of a mystery. Very late toolboxes may have had two small holes for the horn bracket - mine doesn't. There's no separate horn bracket listed by Ariel, which probably/possibly means they bought it from Lucas as part of the horn...

Here's how I sorted the same problem:

Hi,
The low bracket on the toolbox indeed has two small holes added for the Horn bracket.
The seperate bracket from horn to toolbox is actually a small stash of 4 or 5 spring steel plates that gives it a degree of flex against fracture by vibrations.

Thanks all. The toolboxes on both my 57VHs have a 5/16” toolbox mounting hole and only one ¼” horn fixing hole so I had wondered if one side of the horn was fixed by the 5/16” toolbox lower mount, although that would have meant enlarging the hole in the horn mounting plate, or a ¼” lower toolbox fixing bolt. And in that case the mounting plate fouls the lower turned out rib on the toolbox. The toolbox for my 54KH only has the 5/16” mounting hole as it used a different horn. So I have to wonder why my 57 toolboxes only have the one horn mounting hole and what horn or horn bracket was originally fitted. Looks like I will have to add a hole to each.
With regard to the horn brackets there was 2 of the burgundy plates on the horn but 3 of the grey primed brackets on the other horn. However as those horns were purchased at a swap meet I do not know what they were originally fitted to.
