Leader re paint

Post by RichardWL »

Hi Guys, I am trying to decide on a repaint for my 1964 ish Leader or just preserve the rusty look. On the whole shes is pretty well preserved but a few areas are quite bad like the top of the glove box area. Has anyone had success removing the lose rust and sealing with a clear coat, or better to just leave it as is ?
Bike is now completely dismantled so I am tempted to go the whole hog and repaint but its a lot of work.
cheers
Richard

It is difficult to remove the rusty bits and leave the paint, I recently tried various methods without a great deal of success. I would rub over with a cloth and abrasive cleaner like Solvol Autosol then use a good polish like Auto Glym that will give a bit of a shine and protect it. The bike looks too good to re-paint and it is always preferable to keep the original paint if possible.

'Rust never sleeps'.
While it's there it'll carry on slowly eating under more paintwork and further into the metal.

Some of the car guys who like that rusty look use boiled linseed oil to try to maintain the finish (buy a big bottle, wipe it on and allow to dry as I understand it) - if you ask the internet you'll probably find references.

I have decide to go the whole hog and do the re paint, well its in bits now so I may as well. I am keen on the paint from RS paints via the dragonfly website but the shipping to NZ is a bit high. Does any one have advice on cellulose compared to 2k paint that is being offered locally here.
cheers
