Speedo on a 1928 model

Post by Vincent.vanGinneke »

made a separate thread of this.

Charles, a few period pictures.
none of them show the set up as pictured in the sales catalogue.
first pic shows a really akward route for the cable, I wonder if it functioned !

I am sure there are visitors on this forum who know more ! come forward please !

Vincent, thank you very much for those photographs. Mounting on the handlebars makes so much more sense than on the tank. Whoever designed the catalog drawing must have been given the assignment without any guidance. Thanks again.

Speedos were more often than not sold as an accessory by the seller dealer, added later or moved from the owner's previous bike. If supplied by the factory they would fit whatever the customer requested. I have not seen evidence for a 'standard' fitment offered by the factory until the advent of the Smiths PA in 1931
Vincent - You didn't comment on the horn position in the last of your wonderful photos, looks dodgy to me.

The two images tell me exactly what I need to know. Although, I'll use a Chronometric, along with a cable that weighs less than the 50 kg (estimated) of the one in the photograph.''

I can't imagine what the factory was thinking with the image in their sales brochure, since the fuel and oil caps, along with the clamp for them, is under where the speedometer would have to be mounted.

Unfortunately, I'm running out of acreage, so my present speedometer will have to go. Unless I install wider handlebars...

Charles, I think that the image in the catalogue shows a more American approach, like the speedo on early Indians etc.
plus a certain level of artistic freedom from the drawing office at the Ariel factory.

Roger, yes that horn...looks like it hangs from the lower yoke, hmmmm, interesting position.
And it also looks like that the max steering lock got increased :) .
Was'nt there something with '27 forks on a '28 frame ?

Ray, Wedding picture shows -famous- :D Dutch Ariel dealer and racer Jan de Rijk and Klazina Petronella van Vliet on their way to the town hall of Den Haag on the 4th of March 1929.

Ariel Service Bulletin 58 gives details of the Ariel standard speedo fittings from 1929 onwards. But there is nothing for 1928.

By the look of some of them they may be foreign sourced eg USA. Makes like Corbin and Jones. Brough used a very expensive Brit speedo. Bonniksen? The INDIANS Sold by Billy Wells would have had speedos in1912. as well as all chain drive and a clutch with a gearbox.. Nev
