Ariel Colt advance/ retard unit needed

Post by Mickypic »

Bought a 1957 Ariel Colt basket case which the previous owner had dismantled the engine and it looks like he had tried to remove the timing advance / retard unit with a hammer . There is a few bits of the unit left , the two weights, springs, one circlip and cam. Has anyone got a spare unit or remains of one to make a complete one up from the bits I have left. Ariel item number 02097 , I think this unit was also used on some BSA model C eg C10L
Any help appreciated
Michael

Will it fit ?
Pictures of one I found on Internet has same shape, weights and taper fit but the one on eBay now for bsa c12 looks
a different shape, but I am no expert.

I'm 99.9% sure that the one for sale on ebay will fit a Colt, and provide the correct timing advance, although it might be of a different type of construction to the one on your colt - so parts would not be interchangeable between the two.
The seller obviously hasnt been able to take the advance retard unit off the cam, which is why he's selling it all as one lump. you need a certain size threaded bar to take the unit off.
The good news is that the cam is the later ramped type which is the better one to use.
Sometimes i buy things on spec and if they dont fit i sell them on again, the only loss is the postage. :)

Won the eBay auction and package arrived today. As you can see from picture the unit has the same tapper and seems to fit cam ok. Had a job trying to remove from old cam, there is no way I could find of pulling unit off cam ,no thread in centre hole for large bolt to use as extractor, so had to tap loose centre bolt to knock cam off ( hoping not to damage advance unit ).
Does anyone know the proper way to remove unit ?

Have a look at this web page (on another site) it's a detailed description of how to strip a BSA C12 engine, so it is great for a Colt as well because they are similar. About a third of the way down is the info on the tool for parting the advance retard unit from the cam.

This would not work on my unit, the middle hole is totally smooth with no threaded section to screw a bolt into.

See page 15 of the Owner's Guide for method of extraction.
The Colt used Wipac equipment, the C11G and C12 used Lucas so the units are not the same. I think you will find that the depth of the housing is different. The Colt one is however the same as a C10L as you suspected
