1950 sq4 coil mounting

Post by ronrumbolz »

Need some help.
Can anyone provide pictures, drawings, etc. on how the regulator and coil mount on the 1950 sq4, under the seat.
thank you in advance Ron Rumbolz

Interesting subject. The frame should have two lugs under the seat - the regulator mounts directly to these. The coil however...

From what I have seen, and I have looked at lots of pictures, on most dual seat bikes the coil is on the mudguard, under the seat. On single seat bikes it appears to be behind the battery, and it must be on some sort of bracket, but the bracket is not in the parts list.
cheers

Thank you Simon for your input. I looked at that other post you sugested. My 1950 with solo seat has that same tin shield! I dont believe the coil will ever mount to it as it is not stable enough. Parts listed for mounting the coil are just that coil mounting band and nuts and bolts. Maybe it is as simple as mounting to the fender! I will continue to look as i do not need to mount at this time, maybe someone with a known orginal will see this post. Regards Ron

Ron , Simes, noticed the remark about the small vcu cover under the seat.
Here's a pic of a prototype replica part that I will make in serie during coming winter.
In the Ariel parts list it's called 'Cover for voltage control unit' and has part number 6170-37 meaning it was on Ariels from 1937 till (?) last SQ4 ?
Stockist will be our single spares man Pete Kemp.

Hmmmm, I dont know.
Stainless is much harsher on the knifes in the various machines then mild steel.
And....originally they where painted so having it in stainless wont show.
And, I have to keep up production so they need to rot agian so I can keep on making them Eh ?
