Tank ID

Post by wade.edwards »

Just unwrapped several pieces bought long ago and no longer required.

I believe the petrol tank is for a one year only 1956 VH, based on the removable flutes. Has screw holes for the pads and emblems.

Can’t tell if the tank originally had striping of any kind or if it could have been ordered without striping.

Tank and tool box also a perfect 56 match? All have been re-sprayed to as new.

Quite correct - 1956 petrol tank, will probably fit more than the VH (I use an original '55 FH tank and it's quite happy over the VH engine as well; I've got a '56 tank that I don't use but underneath it looks identical to the '55. And like many other folk I can't find a pair of those detachable flutes! )
The oil tank is the non-FERC type (no provision for the wick-feed to the rear chain) but it has got a rocker feed take-off from the return, suits a single or 650 twin.
A nice little collection!

Thank you very much Simon! The FERC info I wouldn’t have guessed.

So, any chance the all black paint with no striping is original?

Did notice Drags does not offer the flutes. One of my flutes is missing the two sheet metal clips, if anyone knows where to obtain?

Normally the tank would be maroon with stripes replicated in the picture here using the original paintwork as a guide.

My VB has the same tank, yes it’s 1956.
So did you remove the flutes?

Rick, the tank came as is, so I did not remove the flutes, but they are laying in front of the tank. Why do you ask?

I believe that the 56 tank fits all 56 model year machines VB through KH and FH but definitely not SQ4.
Of course the detachable flutes make it a one year model tank but it could be used on all swing arm framed machines up until and including 56.

The FERC was optional for 56 and standard thereafter. Therefore the tank shown is a good 56 match without the rear chain oiler but could obviously be adapted.

The pictured oil tank and tool box should fit 54 swingarm frames through 1959, excluding SQs.

Please correct me if I have mislabeled.

Haven’t figured yet if there were any all black tanked and tool boxed 56 models.

Might as well market these as a package so that everything matches.
