Taps and dies
Hi, This my seem like a daft question but what size threads are used on my Nh350? (U.N.F. or U.N.C. etc).
I'm in the process of blasting and painting and will need to clean out the threads.
Cheers Norm

Re: Taps and dies
The vast majority will be BS Cycle; a few will be BSW, particularly where you are threading into alloy.
Ariel didn't start using Unified threads until the Leader arrived - there are no Unified threads on the four strokes, and no BSF either.

Re: Taps and dies
If you get yourself 1/4 x26tpi, 5/16 x 26tpi and 3/8 x 26tpi cycle threads, plus 1/4 x 20tpi whitworth you will be able to deal with 95% of the threads on the bike. I buy HSS ones from Tracy Tools in Devon and it is very unusual not to receive them the day after they are ordered.

Re: Taps and dies
Tracy Tools are excellent to deal with and good on prices too. You could save a few quid by buying the ordinary carbon steel taps and dies if you are only going to be cleaning threads up. They'll cope well with cutting just a few new threads, especially if you are able to cut them first on a lathe, but HSS are well worth the extra if you have a lot of restoration work for them to do.

Re: Taps and dies
Don't mix up 1/4 cycle with 1/4 BSF.
Both are 26tpi, but a different angle.
Tracey Tools are good, also try www.uni-thread.com. I have had good service from them as well.

Sorry to be a pedant, well not really, I quite enjoy it but there are the odd BSF threads on Ariels:- 1953-58 side stand pivot bolt, studs for full width rear sprocket, some SQ4 head bolts; don't ask why 'cos I don't know.

Re: Taps and dies
Thanks for the correction Roger - interested to know which QD hub studs? I've got two QD hubs, but I've not had to clean the treads on either of them - good thing I haven't, I would have assumed they were BSC.
cheers
