Re: Ariel for sale in Sweden
The Despatch Book says a different gearbox number and has no mention of sidecar fittings, although there is mention of them on other bikes on the same page.

Re: VB600 starting issues
Take the outer point off by unscrewing the screw which holds it on. Check that the screw underneath it has not come loose so as to hold the points open. This happened to me last year after goodness knows how many thousand trouble free miles beforehand. Assuming that is ok, replace the point and remo...

Re: Mk1 - oil pump stud threads
Somewhat unusually, for an Ariel thread in alloy, the stud holes for the oil pump on the 4G (and therefore almost certainly on the Mk I, as they used the same oil pump) are 5/16 x 26 tpi cycle thread. 5/16 is 7.9375mm. I have a nasty suspicion that the tight bolts you mention could well be 8mm x 1mm...

Re: Wanted: Oil pump for '56 NH
As I have said previously on this Forum, the oil pump is the best lubricated part of the engine so why should it wear out? My 1937 Red Hunter continues to run satisfactorily with its original oil pump after over 40,000 miles in my ownership and goodness knows how many miles before I got the bike whi...

Re: MK1 sq 4 con rod nuts torque setting
For the original Ariel rods it is 260 ins/lbs so divide by 12 for ft/lbs. This comes from an Ariel Works drawing which gives the only 6 known torque spanner loadings for Ariels. The end float for the cranks (ie measured on the timing side main bearing) is 0.002" to 0.004". This is quoted i...

Re: No Oil Pressure on Gauge? 1950-350 NH
I wouldn't bother re-connecting that gauge. Oil pressure on a single is typically 10 to 15psi so it will hardly register. The gauge is not original but it is of the basic style used in 1950 with a needle pivot at the edge of the gauge rather than in the centre. It is worth taking off the oil pump to...

Re: 1928 Tank Template
The only reference I know of comes from the 1928 parts list. The white area is a reflection ! Do it as you fancy, or have available, in terms of colours then swear blind it is as per original. When someone convinces you that you are wrong, they may have the answer.

Re: Solex carburettor
I have never had a single taper volute spring like Pete Silson's as both mine have been from Drags and symmetrical. I don't recollect ever having a problem with them beyond a tendency for the butterfly to remain very slightly more open than I would have wished. Curing this is a matter of getting the...

Re: Solex carburettor
The same arrangement is used on the cast iron 4G. For both of my 4Gs, I have used the volute spring and found it satisfactory. I understand the preference for the coil tension spring but wonder whether it isn't a greater hazard if or when the spring breaks. The coil tension spring on Madam's 1927 St...
