'51 SQ4 - Reproduction Fuel Tank

Post by paul.ptak »

Before I start cutting and welding, I'm hoping I can get a second opinion or any advice from members with previous experience fitting an aftermarket tank.

I just received a reproduction tank from Draganfly for a '51 SQ4.

The significant problem is that when the tank is as far forward as it can go, tank touching the neck of the frame, all of the mounting holes on the tank are 3/4" too far back. Solution is to remove and relocate the mounting tabs. The tank is also relieved with "dents" under the holes to give clearance for the bolt when the tank is bolted down. Solution is to pound new dents before welding tabs into position.

The next thing I noticed, compared to two factory tanks set into position, is that the aftermarket tanks sits much higher than an original tank. I did not have any mounting rubbers in position when test fitting. Did the tanks for '51 have a different shape compared to the panel type tanks?

The third item, which I'm not sure is a problem is that I cannot move the tank back very far without hitting the seat mounting tabs. This might be relieved when the mounting rubbers are in place...making the tank even higher on the bike.

The first three photos are of the aftermarket tank. The fourth photo is a factory panel style tank for reference to the height difference.

I see you re in USA so sending it back isnt an option......I have a 51 S4 tank on my 50 VG,and its very large compared to the proper panel tank........have to be careful of bar position or the levers will collide with the tank.....

I think I would get in touch with Draganfly to see if they will help rectify the situation first. I have sent parcels from the states marked 'British goods for return' without attracting customs duty. I have also marked them 'American goods for return' for the same purpose. Just be prepared to show your reciepts as proof.
The other point is I wonder if the cutouts in the bottom of the tank will still allow enough room for the top end of the motor should you alter the mounting holes? This is from a bloke who is running a VH500 motor with a NH350 tank. The easy way in my case was a dob of weld on the steering stops and some considerable fiddling with the tank mount rubbers,
Good Luck,

If you are going to fit it why not try these with a steel bar, 1" x 1/4" as long as it needs to be , bolted to the top and back to the tank fitment holes . Dont think you will see them .

I would say that is typical of reproduction Indian tanks. I have only ever seen one that fitted. It had been purchased already chromed. The owner then had it painted, and then fitted it to the bike only to find that when he put petrol in, it came out the seams almost as fast as it went in the filler cap.
It was my understanding however that Draganfly checked all tanks before despatch.
