3d printing

Post by Jan Jensen »

Hi there
I have just acquired a 3d printer and am now looking for items to print. There are any number of funny gadgets to be found in places like Thingiverse, but I'm of course looking for things that would be useful on our Ariels. I am thinking about items such as battery boxes and airfilter boxes.
I have found printing relatively easy, but drawing 3D files too complicated for my abilities.
I wonder if there out there would be wizards having created 3d printing files for such items useful on an Ariel.
If so I would like to suggest that such files was collected in club regi, like other things as spare parts lists and sales catalogues. 3D printers are getting more and more prolific, so it would make sense.

I think it's a good idea to think about a library of files, with some documentation on the material specs - are there any/many standards involved?

Hi,
I have been designing and printing a number of Ariel items. Battery box ( many many hours of printing) , 8 days clock blanking plate, ‘long’ lucas knob 1953. If you want i can share the stl files.
Best regards

Could you also show us some photos of the finished parts.

Attached the photo’s of the 3d printed Ariel parts. The parts were printed with PLA ( polylactic acid ) , which has a melting point of approx 190 deg c and is resistant to oil and petrol !
The knob and plate were sanded to get a mat appearance , the box is as printed and here you can see the separate shiny 0.2 mm plastic “wires”. If you look carefully you can see that the box was printed in 3 parts , because of the long printing times and glued together with super glue.

Hi Hanno
For starters I would appreciate very much to acquire the .stl files for my own fun, but also I have suggested that John Nash create a repository of .stl files the same way we have a repository of other Ariel related material on the AOMCC homepage.
You say that you had to split the battery box in three because of the long printing times. Isn't it just a matter of leaving the printer to itself, and let it finish in due cause, or does the printer have a max working time ?
I don't know how you could share the files, is it possible to attach them to a post here ?

Hi Jan,
Good idea to have a central place for stl files somewhere on the aommc homepage!
The printing time for the battery box was about 34 hours , as i didn’t want the printer to print during the night , i decided to split in 3 parts, although you could of course let the printer go until finished, there is no maximum time.
I tried to copy a .stl file into this post , but it doesn’t let me do this , because of the unknown file extension.
Pls PM me your email address and i will send you the files. If you are interested in modeling yourself , i used OPENSCAD (freeware) to build the models and produce the .stl files.
Regards
Hanno
