Post by Vincent.vanGinneke »

Like the VCH in another post, this RH is up for auction at H&H.

Looking rather tired after it's 'Total restoration' ....

Your teasing me Vincent, i don't know where to start, it must be the same owner as the VCH :D

Teasing you back, i am in the sun, 20 degrees, looking at a snowy mountain on a offroad motorcycle.

Certainly an interesting machine, and a real tribute to the interchangeability of Ariel parts.

It is advertised as a 1932 Ariel Red Hunter of 500cc BUT
Engine and frame are both prefixed K which is for 1930
Engine has 2 drive side bearings so is 1935 on (if RH500) or 1936 on if another model.
Mudguards suggest a VG, although very occasionally VH models were specified to have valanced mudguards
Gear box is about 1938 CP type whilst the 500cc bikes used BA boxes
Forks are 1934 onwards
Tank is 1938 onwards
Frame seems to have the regulator brackets introduced in 1936

I suspect it smokes somewhat, due to the oil feed to the pressure gauge having been connected to the inlet valve guide !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe we should get Ebay, H&H, Carandclassic, Hemmings, etc. to display a banner across all Ariels for sale that proclaims :

1939 and later primary chain guard as well. and the muffler is just ordinary (compared to an original). The BIKE...It's not really "original" is it? Probably a nice bike to ride but needs to be more authentic to have that price attached to it. Nev

Some 10-15 years ago a English gentleman told me he had an original 1932 Red Hunter forsale, so i put my money in the pocket and went with him to his carbox and there was this Ariel, i looked the man in the eye's and went without any word back to the rally site.

O yes, the tank and mudguards are India but it's very cheap for 4000 pounds ;) .

As a point of interest my '37 VH was originally supplied with a valanced front mudguard as indicated by the factory records. At some point this was replaced with the standard VH item. I've considered going back to the original spec but this is hardly a priority and valanced front guards must be difficult to find.
