Hi.
What is the best workshop manual for a 1954 square 4 , 4G mark 2 that I can buy , I need to do a complete engine strip down.

Waller is pretty good, but I supplemented it with an MCN article on stripping a square4 engine, and even the diagrams from the spares lists can be useful.

I am partial to "Modern Motorcycle Mechanics" by Nicholson. You can order it from this page:

but like Paul has suggested you should have a copy of Waller too.

I will order Nicholson but with Waller he has heaps out, can some one point me in the right direction the book that deals with the 4G mark 2 that Waller wrote , I am not the sharpest tool in the draw working with computers and the different sites.

There's only one Waller... it deals with all models. It was updated as new machines were released, so you have to watch what edition you are buying.
It was first published in 1948; I have a 4th edition from 1952 and a 5th edition from1956.

You'll need the 5th edition.

There's also a Floyd Clymer version of the the same book, published in the US.

There is a version of Waller in the documents section on the members' website - you need to be a member for access. Can't check which year is on at the moment because CSN - computer says NO

Looking at Draganfly's website I wonder whether the manual advertised as WM48SQ is an extract from Waller. Perhaps somebody who has one could confirm.

A parts book for your model will be very useful because of the exploded diagrams.

The Nicholson book is also a later edition,all Jappa s and HD mostly.You need the first or second edition.At least this was the situation a few years ago.

Have you started the strip yet, Drew. DON'T try to remove the head without proper information.

There are nuts between the fins on the block because of four head studs which screw into the head and point DOWNWARDS.

I have to disagree with your statements. The 7th edition of Nicholson's Modern Motorcycle Mechanics is an excellent manual for an Ariel Square Four MK11. Yes, 97 out of its 766 pages are devoted to Japanese and American bikes but the 1st and 2nd editions have a couple of hundred fewer pages. This latest edition has eliminated some of the information found in earlier editions but, for example, is information on girder forks pertinent to the owner of a MK11 Sq4? On the other hand, the 7th edition has many updated details that apply only to the later bikes.
I hope Drew buys a copy and reports back to us on his impressions.
