FH Chaincase still leaking

Post by paulhvtr »

Hi all

fH chain case still dumping oil out the back taken it apart again.

The only thing I can see is that it being flun out the back of the chain wheel.

Any ideas if the steel guard should kiss the chain wheel or how far to prise out and leave a gap

It's the only thing now no oil hole that's blocked of as I have Ferg

Cheers Paul

Hi Paul,
The best long term answer to this well documented Ariel primary chaincase issue is to do the chainwheel mod. which consists of riveting two different size aluminium 'dishes' either side of the chainwheel. After properly doing this modification you will be able to fill the oil level in the chaincase up to the level plug without it being thrown out through the gearbox mainshaft hole in the back part of the case. Peter Kemp, the Ariel Single Spares man, can supply the kit to do this. If you are a club member you can obtain his details from 'Cheval' or through this site. I have done the mod to my late NH single and it completely cured this problem. The same mod is applicable to the twins and other models. If you don't want to do the mod then the answer is to run the lowest level of oil you can get away with in the primary chaincase, that is with the lower run of the primary chain just kissing the oil as checked with the bike on the centre stand on level ground.
Regards,
Keith.

Paul.it may beyond have too much fluid in the case. I fill mine to the level plug and then tip the bike over 45 degrees to give the correct level.

Paul - have you got the wick feed from the oil tank (which replaces the drip from the primary chaincase on FERC bikes) set up correctly?
(Although if you don't have the right oil tank that question will be irrelevant :D )
