GB gearbox gear lever spline size.
I bought a gear lever on Fleabay described as: “NOS for a Burman GB gearbox suitable for Norton, BSA, Ariel, etc. With 3/4 inch spline.” Fitting it today the spline hole is too big for the shaft. Two questions. Firstly, how do you size a spline shaft, is it just the diameter across the splined surface? Secondly, on a1955 Ariel NH what should the spline size be? Lastly, does anyone have a suitable, used gear lever in serviceable condition that they are willing to sell?
Many thanks,
Dennis

CLAMPED splines can be a Pain if they are not tight. I wouldn't bother with an alloy one. It won't work for long. Get the right one. Life is too short. Nev

Nev,
Agreed but gear levers don’t seem to be on plentiful supply!

Hi
Isn't the alloy lever the 'standard' one Nev? my 58 FH has an alloy one. On AMC machines I'm pretty sure the steel ones were only supplied on competition models.
Regards Mick

Well you then don't have a lot of choice. IF it's a tight fit it will last a lot longer and being a larger dia helps. A spline really can't be adjusted by a Pinch bolt in principle. Some have the first two teeth absent. Nev

Re: GB gearbox gear lever spline size.
Perhaps my original post was unclear. The alloy gear lever hole is far too big for the spline; it does not even touch the splines. The lever was described as 3/4” diameter. When buying another lever what size diameter should it be?

Hi Dennis
I think the splines are 11/16", (that's the diameter of the shaft before forming).
