Occasional primary side noise -Mk1
Hi. Does anyone know what noise(es) a loose crankshaft spherical roller outer would make? Occasionally I get a clack-clack from what I think is the primary side of the engine. A bit like a harsh tappet....but sometimes not completely synchronous. Only happens if the engine is quite hot, but doesnt alway happen. I don't think it is the primary chain, which currently has about 20mm up/down play. My head keeps going to a bearing issue....probably the outer when hot. I imagine an issue with the rolling element would be a constant noise.

Oh, and I meant to add that noise only occurs at slow idle....slight raise in revs and noise disappears

That noise is one of the motivations behind fitting electronic ignition - I've not tested it yet, but I'm hoping that if it evens out the ignition of each cylinder, the coupling gear noise might reduce.
I can't help feeling there's a bubble waiting to burst...

"They all do that Sir . . ."
Owner's Guides all contain the following couple of paragraphs in the "Driving Tips" section:
which suggests that knocking from the coupling gears was common enough for
Ariel to have to formally acknowledge it.

Bubble waiting to burst? I hope that doesn't meant a blown enginesimon.holyfield wrote: Sat May 17, 2025 3:04 pmThat noise is one of the motivations behind fitting electronic ignition - I've not tested it yet, but I'm hoping that if it evens out the ignition of each cylinder, the coupling gear noise might reduce.

I think there's a lot of merit in using electronic points .....my distributor points have worn unevenly to the point where there is around 0.005" variation from smallest to largest gap. I'm sure the CDI unit would even this out resulting in a smoother idle. Cam

I'm sure it would. I've got a positive earth Accuspark sitting here doing nothing...camstevens wrote: Sat May 17, 2025 5:43 pm I think there's a lot of merit in using electronic points .....my distributor points have worn unevenly to the point where there is around 0.005" variation from smallest to largest gap. No nothing like that! I'm just thinking that maybe I'm being naïve in hoping the coupling gear rattle will improve.camstevens wrote: Sat May 17, 2025 5:39 pm Bubble waiting to burst? I hope that doesn't meant a blown engine![]()
