2 plate clutch centre.
Hi.
Currently doing the 3 plate clutch mod to my ht5.
Could someone tell me if there is any difference between the 2 and 3 plate centres as rather than turning the lugs off the one I've got, I'd rather turn them off a spare and keep my original.
Thanks
Richard.

The three-plate centre is appreciably deeper front-to-back to accommodate the
additional plate.

Thanks. Other than that are the rest of the dimensions the same. I can turn the depth to suit.
Thanks
Richard.

Re: 2 plate clutch centre.
How are you proposing to add a third plate?
Later, 1957 onwards clutch centres didn't have the tags at the back to restrain the pressure
plates but the clutch basket was changed to add friction material for the now unrestrained
pressure plate to be pressed against. The effect of this modification was to increase the
area available for 'grip'.

Re: 2 plate clutch centre.
Hi.
I'm intending fitting the third plate with the lugs of the plate filed off and the centre's lugs turned down. I was just a bit hesitant to turn the lugs off the centre I have in case it didn't work out.
i was hoping I could find another 2 plate centre to use or wether a 3 plate one could be modified.
As an aside, with the third plate floating off the centre and pressing against the outer basket I'm assuming it would make it a bit more stable and less wobbly.
Cheers
Richard.

It shouldn't wobble much anyhow. I can't understand why you want to reduce the width of the centre while using 3 plates. You can have the Plate falling out of register with the centre when disengaged and you get no drive . Same with over thick Plates. Nev

As Nev says the clutch shouldn't wobble much. The pressure plate can wobble with the
clutch lever pulled in but adjusting the clutch springs can usually sort that out. Does the
clutch basket wobble and does the primary chain tension vary at the same time?
Out of interest how original is your HT?

Hi.
I don't think you're reading.or I'm not explaining very well.
I was asking if a centre for a 3 plate clutch was the same as a 2 plate clutch except for it's thickness, in which case I can reduce it's thickness in the lathe to that of a 2 plate centre.before turning the lugs off.
In standard form the clutch basket will wobble a bit on the needle roller bush as the clutch plates will stop against the lugs on the centre and not press against the basket.
Cheers
Richard.

I'm no expert on these but may have had a similar issue myself. If this (see pic) is what you are referring to, then I have done it myself.

I think you just need to make sure the area that fits over the carrier on the gearbox shaft is the same (ie with/without boss) - there were some changes in that area over the years.
To an extent it's all interchangeable although there are good and bad combinations - but we can't be certain exactly what you're starting with, bikes like HTs can have a lot of modifications.
