Re: Ariel Four
The rear coupling gear has the same thread as the front one for removing the gear. There is a drawing available of the puller you need, and also of the two other pullers you need to put the coupling gears back on once you have sorted out the bottom end of the engine. Cleaning out the 4 sludge traps in the cranks is a must and you need to remove the cranks from the cases to do this so your coupling gears are going to have to come off.
Your box of bits contains some very recognisable Square Four parts although some of the rubber bits in particular don't appear to be of Ariel origin.

There were two bikes in the Nebraska barn.
The seller sent all the loose parts and suspected some of the parts came from another bike.
I ordered the gear puller from Draganfly.
Thanks for your post.

Re: Ariel Four
Draganfly does not have the 1180-49 oil seal that goes between the crankshaft gear and case.
What is the purpose of this seal ?
Can the engine run without this seal /

Re: Ariel Four
This oil seal was introduced in 1949 so the 4G iron engined Squares were not originally fitted with one. So you can run without one. But, my 1936 4G needed one to prevent oil flowing through the bearings into the primary chaincase causing excessive leakage from there. You might be lucky without one, or you might not.

Re: Ariel Four
Paul,
Thanks for your reply.
There is a .020" gap between the bearing and the case.
I could make a thick washer that pressed on the back of the sprocket drive to reduce the clearance to .001"
Comments ?

Re: Ariel Four
The oil seal goes onto the extractor threads on the rear coupling gear with its lip on the bearing outer, so it is inside the coupling gear cover in your photo. I wouldn't bother with the thick washer, just try the bike and see what to do if it does leak oil.
