Ariel single crank pin location
I now assume that the Ariel single crankpin location must differ from the crank centre line for 85mm, 95 mm, and 102mm stroke engines. In my collection of single cranks that I have acquired I have a polished steel flywheel crank with a rod #KE 305 which gives me a 85 mm stroke. It came with cases that are 1949 VCH per Roy Bacon's book #EJ2421X.
I also have a cast iron crank with a VB rod A7/524 which gives a 85mm stroke in the cases with a VB barrel bored to 87mm, but the piston does not go to the top on the barrel. It is 10mm too short, the measured stroke is between 85-86mm. I am endeavoring to build a side valve Ariel of any displacement for a demonstration only sprint bike.
Any suggestions? Thank you.
Bill
PS. I think I should have passed on this pile of parts.

Re: Ariel single crank pin location
Hi Bill, I think KE 305 refers to a material spec, it isn't an Ariel number. The length of the rod doesn't alter the stroke, only the centres between the crankpin and the shafts will do that. A VB should have a 102mm stroke, your crank with 85 stroke that stops 10 mm short of the top adds up as it will also be 10mm short at the bottom and 85+20=105, almost 102!
You need a different crank or if you want a short stroke VB shorten the cylinder or use a piston with a greater pin to top of piston dimension.
EJ 2421X is from a standard VH despatched to Wilson's in Rotherham, that's Yorkshire not Canada

Re: Ariel single crank pin location
Good morning Roger,
Thank you very much for the crank information for my side valve project. I will now see if I can find a VB crank over here.
Take care,
bill

What is the use of asking a question via "prived mail" if youre not looking at the answer.

At the top you see "prived messages", you have asked a question in there.
One of the anwers is; you cannot race a cast VB crank on methanol it will distroy your engine.

I think the hovercraft has some eels in it, in English 'Prived' is private, in the terms of a forum it is a way of communicating with another person using the medium of the forum but privately and without divulging your own email address.

Thanks Roger for the insight. I guess things are a little different over here in the colonies. I did not what I had done.
