Hi all,

how do you get the float out of a side floater?

Please define 'side floater'.

Sorry, folks, I mean the Amal 289 as fitted to a 1939 VH.

I notice the base nut 29/078 does not want to unscrew either.

one of these:

You unscrew the top of the float chamber. There is a small bolt, towards the edge, which "locks the threads" and needs to be loosened before you can unscrew the lid.
Reach in and pinch the top tabs of the float, which are in a groove on the float needle, and lift it out.
The float needle will now drop out of the bottom

That base nut doesn't need to come off - I have tried a few times out of curiosity but gave up before I destroyed a perfectly good float bowl..

Thanks for the replies. I would like to completely dismantle this filthy carb down to the jet block. It has been skulking in my shed for about 30 years!

Can the jet block be removed without undoing the base nut?

No - You can see the jet block several pictures down this blog post:

You'll see it has a narrow flange at the base which means it has to be removed downward. Don't knock it out from the top, they are very easy to bend. You can pull it out using the needle jet thread.

Yes it's held in place by the base nut which has a "Correct sized" Gasket to seal it It's also desired to have a good fit in the body of the carburetter also to connect to the idle passages.. There's two TYPES ie for the early body with the holes all around and the later one suitable for aircleaner fitting. You also have a left and right idle speed screw option. There's a relieved bit near the top to allow the screw to clear the jet block. You could file one in with a rat tail file if you are stuck. Nev
