Looking for a "basic" guide to cleaning and servicing the monobloc Amal carb in the picture. Have a gasket set on order from Draganfly, a tin of carb cleaner and a tin of thinners. Bike is black smoking (then losing power, then stalling) so investigating fuel/air supply. Probably optimistic but am a new member so wondered there is some fairly straightforward advice. I've never serviced a carb before but doing a lot of reading.

is the choke lever screw tight enough , the air/choke lever may be moving as you run/ride it and closing the choke , same goes for advance/retard lever ..
check the float needle is sealing and that float is not punctured and check float when its at its level is sealing the float needleotherwise it will just flood fuel in . .

Mike,
'Spect an expert will be along soon but in the meantime see here
https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycl ... s-and-Tips. And take it apart over a large tray to stall escapees. (Don't ask how I know.)

That looks very close to the "Amal Carbs for dummies" that I was after, many thanks. Now to find a large tray...

The float pivots on a pin. Outside the float on the pin should be a spacer to stop the float moving out and letting the float needle loose. If the spacer is missing it takes a while to work this out. Hard experience, circa 1971, but the symptoms were similar.

I remember when the monobloc first came out. It had it's critics then so set up the float very carefully. Nev

Thanks Nev, will pay attention to it. The float is covered in a layer of lacquer which is crumbling off, imagine removing that will help matters

The spacer on the float pin is there but the float needle seems to be quite stiff in its hole so will give the whole thing a de gunking and see how it goes
