VB rear upper chain guard

Hi all.

re. 1946 VB rigid with Tele forks.
I am getting close to finishing this multi year project. Still some wiring and other bits to complete but the thought of actually putting some petrol in the tank and kicking it over is filling me with apprehension. I can't wait!
You may recall I bought this project as a pile of bits and have never seen it together.

I am struggling to modify and fit an Indian sourced rear Upper Chain Guard. ( I bought this a few years ago and have only just got around to fitting )
I have modified the front mounting and cut away the side to clear the chain case but I can't see how the back is mounted.
There is a threaded hole on the top just after the center Pump holding clip which is an obvious place for the rear mounting.
But what connects to this. Maybe I have to make a bracket up with some sort of "P" type clip to fix to a frame rail but the most adjacent rails are not at convenient angles.
Anyone with a rigid VB and can supply a picture of the guard attachments particularly the back mount will receive my appreciations. .... and maybe a fine NZ beer if we are ever allowed to travel again!

It bolts to a tab on one of the mudguard stays doesn't it? It's certainly like that on my '42.

If you have a close look at the some of the photos on this page you should be able to make out the the chain guard attached to the 'vertical' rear stay (yours should be the same).

Thanks Simon. I will check that later today. I haven't noticed a tab on an adjacent stay, mind you I have been looking for somewhere on the frame.

mm, not sure how to advise this, without looking like a simpleton...
Checked the back Mud Guard stays on my bike and found the tab in question, however it is on the otherside!.
I remember contemplating which way round the stay went and decided the way I have it, made the lifting handle easier to operate.
Drag's diagram didn't look correct to me.

Only excuse I have is we are, after all, located on the otherwise of the world to the UK where the bike was designed and manufactured.
Upside down as it were.....

Now I have a job for the weekend.

This picture is a 1949 rigid with a different mudguard but the stay is the same as a '46. The threaded hole (1/4" 26 tpi) on the top of the chainguard bolts to a small bracket on the inside of the stay.

I can see how it mounts perfectly.
However can you advise what the black slot headed screws at the bottom end does?

I also note your mud guard doesn't appear to have a removable or hinged rear portion to allow the wheel to be easily removed?
I can also see , now, where to run the brake light electrical cable, and where the associated switch mounts!

Nothing - It fills a hole that had been drilled in the chainguard where it had been bodge by a previous owner to fit a different stay.

To get the wheel out the whole mudguard hinges about the forward mounts (by the seat springs) after undoing the lower stay bolts - in a similar way to later models. I don't know whether the mudguard is correct for 1949 but it came with the bike but I believe that some parts are unique to 1949 Ariels. It could be a 1951 mudguard with the two of the edge tabs removed?
