Today I took the SQ4 to pieces to remove the magdyno and see if I could clean it up a bit to coax a few more amps out of her. I suspected that it was a bit oily inside and the ammeter was determined to remind me to give it a clean.
In my haste to pull the armature out the helical gear came off and with it the washer inside the distributor housing. I should know whether it goes between the gear and the front bearing or behind the gear next to the shoulder on the armature shaft but I don't.
I can't find a diagram or instruction anywhere. Do I reassemble the washer, then the helical gear or the other way round? Can anyone help please?

Re: SQ4 magdyno distributor gear
Fortunately I sorted my own problem before it became too embarrassing. The washer belongs with the nut on the end of the shaft holding the timing sprocket in place. It had slipped though into the distributor space as I slid the armature out. Problem solved. Armature, brushes and connectors cleaned. No short circuits and reasonable field coil resistance measured. No time to rotate it to speed but it looks and feels a lot more likely to output a voltage and current.
