Re: 1946 bitsa project
Fantastic work.
That light looks great.
Will you need to weld a rib on the back of the licence plate holder as the section supporting the light might be vunerable to vibration cracking ?
(You wouldn't want to loose the light out on the road).

Re: 1946 bitsa project
Thank you both - almost time to get the parts painted so it's getting exciting!
I've wondered about cracking too Julian, so much so that I even remade the plate & taillight holder in thicker steel. It's now 3/32" thick - approx. 1.5mm. Fortunately the taillight is a light pressing and the most likely fracture line is not a sharp bend but a 1/4" radius. And the wiring will act as a safety harness if it breaks.
I once had an Altette horn bracket break and that heavy lump just dangled on the wires!

Re: 1946 bitsa project
I had that happen on my W/NG and it Jammed the steering. ( Front mounted) Mudguard against Frame. Nearly came a big gutser. Nev
Re: 1946 bitsa project
That would be bad! This was also front mounted but had very short wires and no valenced mudguard.nevhunter wrote: Sun Nov 02, 2025 2:23 am I had that happen on my W/NG and it Jammed the steering. ( Front mounted) Mudguard against Frame. Nearly came a big gutser. Nev

Standard W/NG front guard and horn Mount. They need a block of damping rubber. At certain revs the Horn vibrates and the engine is balanced well. It hits a Harmonic in the LOW 3rd gear on Hills. I've done about 20,000 miles on this bike. Nev
Re: 1946 bitsa project
Nev, where did you put the block of rubber? I put one between the frame and the back of the horn and it has lasted about 8,000 miles. It would be nice to pinch the rubber under the mounting bolt but with only one bolt it will probably rotate.nevhunter wrote: Mon Nov 03, 2025 6:25 am Standard W/NG front guard and horn Mount. Re: 1946 bitsa project
Wedged under the Bottom of the Horn, but you Might as well just check it for cracks periodically. I had a Heap of Original style Brackets Made and Most are gone. I've also made the Gear Ratios CIVILIAN and don't have to rev the crap out of it in 3rd Gear any more up Hills. Nev
Re: 1946 bitsa project
All the parts fit together so the next step is to get them ready for paint!
Finish welding of the silencer brackets. (pic so you can see what it looks like)
The rear fender had some extra holes
that needed welding up and a friend suggested backing the hole with copper. The backing keeps the molten steel from dripping though the hole and prevents oxygen from entering the weld from the back side.
All the parts were cleaned up with a buffing disk or a wire wheel and then pickled with phosphoric acid. Ready for the painter!
